About Our Website

Body:

The new ConcernedJournalists.org website is designed to provide a variety of tools and information for journalists, managers, educators, students, and citizens. Our overarching goals are: to provide American and international journalists and newsroom managers with tools, information, and inspiration they can use to improve the quality of their work; to facilitate discussions about the issues facing journalism in newsrooms and in forums on our website; and to teach citizens what to expect – and demand – from the media. Here is a brief description of each part of the site and how to get the most from it. IN THE SPOTLIGHT: The site will frequently feature new content in the In the Spotlight section. It may be an announcement about our training program (the Traveling Curriculum), commentary on a journalism topic by one of our staff or members, an article on a new media trend, or an interesting piece of research. ABOUT CCJ: CCJ has undergone many changes in the past few months. This section introduces our current staff, gives overviews about our organization’s history and its goals, shares our funding and intellectual capital partners, and provides updates about organization activities. COMMENTARY AND RESEARCH: The Commentary and Research section may look a lot like our home page, but closer inspection will reveal a deep pool of interesting research, inspiring speeches, and opportunities to participate in discussions about the craft of journalism in “Talking Journalism.” TOOLS: One of the most frequently-visited sections of CCJ’s former online home was "J-Tools," our journalism tools digest. This section contains hundreds of tools for journalists and news managers working in all media, international journalists, educators and students, and citizens trying to learn to become more discerning media consumers. A “J-Tools” box appears in the upper right corner of most pages on the website – allowing for quick navigation to tools organized by audience and topic. NEWSROOM DEVELOPMENT: CCJ’s Traveling Curriculum newsroom training program has visited more than 120 print, broadcast, and online newsrooms around the country and provided training to nearly 7,500 journalists nationwide. Information about this innovative, economical training program and how to bring the Traveling Curriculum to your newsroom resides in this section. This section also includes findings from a three-year study of the Traveling Curriculum program to determine what impact it was having on the journalists and organizations it trained. Additionally, a “Case Study Curriculum” which individuals and newsrooms can use to discuss how they would have handled recent issues in journalism is housed in this section. MEMBERSHIP: CCJ has a membership of more than 7,000 journalists, educators, students, and citizens worldwide. Membership is free, and in the past has largely been symbolic. However, we plan to mobilize this membership more effectively in the future, starting with sending out newsletters containing commentary and updates about CCJ activities more regularly, and by getting members more involved in online discussions triggered by content and questions we place on the site. CAREER RESOURCES: ConcernedJournalists.org is not designed to be a clearinghouse for information about jobs in journalism, although we do have a page containing links to other sites that do serve that purpose. Our goal in this section is to provide information on resources and materials visitors can use to learn more about the journalism profession and other organizations engaged in critical thinking about the ideals and future of journalism. LOOKING AHEAD: CCJ will continue offering its high-quality newsroom training around the country, and is getting involved in new initiatives that will expand its reach and visibility. We’re excited about our new affiliation with the University of Missouri School of Journalism and its Reynolds Journalism Institute, and the potential that affiliation brings for new projects and challenges. We’ll innovate on this website to add more interaction with users in an attempt to further the conversation about the future of journalism on which this organization is built. BEHIND THE SITE: Phase2 Technology built and powers the site. Hirshorn Zuckerman Design Group did the design. WHAT DO YOU THINK: We invite your reactions to the new site.
